ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Downtown living, apparently, is at a premium.
93 percent of all the housing units downtown are occupied, up one percent from the year before, say the latest stats from Downtown STL Inc.
That’s a figure which Chief Operating Officer Missy Kelley says “is pretty solid for any market, but considering the context of what the region has undergone, 93 percent is pretty stellar.”
Taking the five-year view, the number of people living downtown rose 21 percent, versus St. Louis City as a whole which fell 0.2 percent and the entire region which lost half a percentage point of population.
And speaking of the metro area, Kelley says the health of downtown should be a regional concern.
“They should be really excited that this is taking place,” she says, “because when people think about St. Louis, nationally, they think about the city and downtown is the heart of our city.”
